Iran at the Olympics

The Islamic Republic of Iran, officially called Iran, will be competing at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11, 2024. This will be Iran's eighteenth appearance at the Summer Olympics, having made its debut at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London.

Iran's delegation at the 2024 Summer Olympics

Iran will be represented by a delegation of 40 athletes, including 29 men and 11 women. The athletes will compete in a variety of sports, including athletics, boxing, canoeing, cycling, fencing, football, judo, karate, rowing, shooting, swimming, taekwondo, volleyball, weightlifting, and wrestling.

The Iranian delegation will be led by chef de mission Mahmoud Rashidi, who has served in this role since 2016. Rashidi is a former Olympic wrestler who competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

Iran's medal prospects at the 2024 Summer Olympics

Iran has a strong tradition of success at the Summer Olympics, having won a total of 87 medals, including 19 golds, 21 silvers, and 47 bronzes. Iran's most successful sport at the Olympics is wrestling, in which the country has won 36 medals, including 12 golds.

Iran is expected to be competitive in a number of sports at the 2024 Summer Olympics, including wrestling, taekwondo, weightlifting, and shooting. The country's top medal contenders include:

  • Hassan Yazdani (wrestling): Yazdani is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and is considered to be one of the best wrestlers in the world.
  • Amir Hossein Zare (weightlifting): Zare is a two-time Olympic medalist and is the current world record holder in the 96 kg weight class.
  • Javad Foroughi (shooting): Foroughi is a two-time Olympic medalist and is the current world record holder in the 10m air pistol event.

Iran's goal at the 2024 Summer Olympics is to finish in the top 20 of the medal table. The country's best performance at the Olympics came in 2012, when it finished 12th with 12 medals, including seven golds.
